A Ceremony

out from the darkness shone a lonely light. a beacon of brightness embedded in hollow night. and with hearts as big as this now, it's late and we're growing tired. quiet as a new snow. warm as a winter's fire. for all the times the warmth of your spine was pressed against my chest with my arms wrapped around you tight, say goodnight. what seems uncertain is often poorly timed. we're made from our memories, we can't just let them die and with eyes as big as this, it's so good to see you smile. we're molded from memory. it's so hard to say goodbye. for all the times the warmth of your spine was pressed against my chest and my arms wrapped around you tight... i won't say goodbye, but i'll say goodnight.

this house feels so empty since you found your peace. in time this hole you left will mend, until then i'll just pretend everything's fine. i held you in my arms but i could not keep you from harm. the days replay somehow in memory from then until now like you were still around but it's over now. we've reached the end. farewell, my friend. sleep well.

i saw you start across the road, you had somewhere to go. the ache you feel inside your bones... you're just getting old and feeling the cold. you were on your way to meet for tea or coffee and wearing your favorite sweater. you sit down and say "hello, my friend. how ya' been?" and the talk turns to the weather and the cold. you woke up earlier that day and got dressed in the same way. walking out the front way past the mailman and he said, "how about this weather?". i saw you walk across the road, you had somewhere to go on a grey day in december. the ache you feel in your bones? you're just getting old and feeling the weather and the cold. you were on your way to store for the grandchild you adore and thinking about what you might get her but the icing on the road made it hard for the cars to slow... so now you're severed from all you've ever known. you woke up earlier that day and got dressed in the same way you have for eighty-seven years. you were walking out the front way past the mailman and he said, "how about this weather?" i saw you start across the road with somewhere to go but you'd never get there. and if all your lovely thoughts were tangled up in knots about the weather... we'll never know.
